Newsmaker: Eugene Sanders, PhD, CEO Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The Cleveland Public schools are just over a week away from welcoming students back for a new academic year. Two new high schools headline the opening. They’ll be dedicated to the teaching of science, technology and math, thus their nickname, STEM schools. Despite recent advances in academic performance, the Cleveland schools are still troubled by declining enrollment, discipline problems and poor attendance.
Roundtable: April McClellan-Copeland, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Joan Mazzolini, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Greg Saber, reporter, WTAM 1100.
Councilwoman Fannie Lewis: One of the longest-serving members of Cleveland City Council died this week at the age of 82. Lewis was known for her often blunt and abrasive approach to public life. But she was admired by her constituents who saw her as a visible and effective advocate at City Hall. Lewis was instrumental in bringing new development to her Hough ward, but her dream of redeveloping League Park as a commercial/residential complex has never materialized.
MetroHealth to Turn Away Patients: Cuyahoga County’s financially-strapped public hospital says it will stop offering free or reduced-price care to patients from outside the county. MetroHealth is heavily-subsidized, but has been unable to cover the costs of charity care. The result was a multi-million dollar deficit and staff layoffs.
Rock Hall Opens NYC Branch: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame plans to open a subsidiary this fall in Manhattan’s SoHo district. Museum officials hope giving visitors to New York a taste of the Cleveland hall will entice them to visit the real thing. The New York branch will be a fraction of the size of the Cleveland facility and will feature artifacts on loan from Cleveland.
