Roundtable: Stan Bullard, senior reporter, Crain’s Cleveland Business; Kevin O’Brien, columnist, The Plain Dealer; Erick Trickey, senior editor, Cleveland magazine.

Bailout: The Bush administration employed a full court press this week to encourage Congress to pass a $700-billion dollar bailout for the ailing investment banking industry. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before Congressional committees. President Bush went on national radio and TV to say, “Our entire economy is in danger.” Both major political candidates planned to meet with the President Thursday and Republican John McCain called for a postponement of the first debate, scheduled for Friday night.

Extra Voting Hours: November’s presidential election is expected to bring unprecedented numbers of voters to the polls. Local election officials, hoping to avoid logjams at polling places have sent absentee voting applications to all registered voters and they’re extending hours at the Board of Elections office to accommodate those voting with absentee ballots.

Pat O’Malley’s Troubles: Former Cuyahoga County Recorder Pat O’Malley is scheduled for sentencing next week on a federal obscenity charge. O’Malley’s guilty plea came after investigators found obscene materials on his computer. The sentencing is the end of a long fall for a public official who was once one of the local Democratic Party’s rising stars.

Gun Ban Ruling: The Ohio Supreme Court has struck down an Ohio city’s ban on carrying concealed weapons in a park. Justices ruled the city of Clyde’s ban on guns was broader than state law allowed. Bans must be limited to locations specifically mentioned in the state law. The ruling was the latest in a series that rejects the concept of home rule in favor of statewide restrictions.
