Newsmaker: Jane Platten, director, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections: More than 16-million Americans, about 300-thousand in Greater Cleveland have cast ballots in the days leading up to the election. Ohio is one of 30 states that allow voters to use absentee ballots without giving a reason. Despite the emphasis on early voting, polling places around the state are bracing themselves for long lines and long waits on election day next Tuesday.
Roundtable: Brian Tucker, publisher and editorial director, Crain’s Cleveland Business; Bill Sheil, weekend anchor, Fox 8 News; Bill Livingston, sports columnist, The Plain Dealer.
Ready, Set, Vote! On the eve of the election, the Buckeye battleground state is still up for grabs. The most recent newspaper poll of Ohio voters shows Barack Obama with a three-point lead over John McCain. That’s a key reason both campaigns made multiple appearances in Ohio this week and have plans for more.
Falling Flats: Developer Scott Wolstein this week stopped work on a planned half-billion dollar commercial and residential development in the Flats. Wolstein’s problems in getting private financing for the project forced it to be put on hold, raising doubts about the future of other downtown revitalization projects.
Bye-Buy Out at National City: Pittsburgh’s PNC is acquiring troubled National City Corp. The Cleveland bank lost billions in the sub prime mortgage meltdown and efforts to secure federal bailout funds got the cold shoulder in Washington. Now, Cleveland loses a major corporate player and it’s possible thousands of people could lose their jobs. Congressman Steve LaTourette says it appears PNC used federal bailout money to purchase National City, a precedent that could lead to similar deals.
Kellen and the King: Browns tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr. is back with the team and preparing to play against the Ravens Sunday after a dust-up with team management. Winslow was unhappy with the team’s reaction to his recent treatment for a staph infection and the team was unhappy with Winslow. The Browns played well in his absence. The Cavaliers lost their season opener to the defending champion Boston Celtics, but this is a season of high expectations for the Cavs given the leadership of maturing star LeBron James and the acquisition of shooting guard Mo Williams.
