Newsmaker 1—Representative Dennis Kucinich, D-Cleveland: The first few months of the 111th Congress have been among the most rancorous and eventful in recent memory. Congress has enacted a giant stimulus package, acted to preserve General Motors and Chrysler and passed the largest federal budget in history. But Congress has stalled for the time being on a major restructuring of the health care system. Many members have taken advantage of the Congressional recess to connect with constituents on the health care issue, often to find vehement opposition. Mr. Feagler will talk with Kucinich about where health care restructuring legislation is headed next, whether the stimulus package was stimulating enough, and other issues of interest to northeast Ohio.

Newsmaker 2—Terry Allan, Cuyahoga County Health Commissioner: U.S. health leaders are preparing for what could be a bad flu season in the coming fall and winter. H1N1, or swine flu, has touched millions around the globe and produced more than 400 deaths in the United States and the worst could be ahead as millions of children head back to school. Also of concern are other flu strains emerging in the southern hemisphere where it’s winter. Researchers are preparing vaccines for both swine flu and seasonal varieties. The vaccines are undergoing human testing now and won’t be ready for distribution until fall. Mr. Feagler talks with Allan about flu prevention and treatment and about what happens if flu cases blossom into an epidemic.
