Newsmaker—Kathleen Burke, Executive Director, Ohio Lottery Commission:
The former partner in the Cleveland law firm Jones Day, Burke was appointed in August to helm the state’s $2.4-billion lottery. As executive director she oversees day-to-day operation of the game which distributes its net proceeds to Ohio schools. She’ll also be in charge of the installation of video slot terminals at Ohio race tracks. Governor Strickland and lawmakers agreed to expand state gaming operations in hopes of raising hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue.

Roundtable—Henry Gomez, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Bill Sheil, anchor, Fox 8 News; Brian Tucker, publisher and editorial director, Crain’s Cleveland Business.

Casino Gambling—Impending creation of racinos in Ohio has done nothing to blunt the enthusiasm of business interests that want to build commercial casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo. If voters approve Issue 3 in the November election, they’ll have a mandate to move ahead with the casinos. The first ads in a high-dollar high-visibility campaign are hitting the airwaves now.

Cleveland Primary—Mayor Frank Jackson was an easy winner in Cleveland’s municipal primary on Tuesday. Jackson got more than twice as many votes as the other four candidates combined. He’ll face former councilman Bill Patmon in the November runoff. In the city council primaries, Ward 14 incumbent Joe Santiago was the only loser. Current member Brian Cummins faces Rick Nagin in November.

Obama on Health Care—President Obama made a forceful pitch for his health care plan in a speech Wednesday to a joint session of Congress. He said the ‘time for bickering is over…now is the season for action.’ The crucial days for the health care debate are ahead. Congress has just returned from its summer recess with the knowledge that the health issue is Job 1.

Cleveland Clinic Czar Caught in Fat Flap—Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove refused this week to back away from his comment to the New York Times that he wouldn’t hire obese people if he legally had that choice. Cosgrove defended the statement at a Clinic obesity conference, saying it was meant to spur discussion on a significant national health problem.
