Newsmaker: Samuel H. Miller, Co-chairman and Treasurer, Forest City Enterprises, Inc. The longtime Cleveland business leader is one of the biggest supporters of regional cooperation. He’ll explain his views in an interview with Mr. Feagler.
Roundtable: Joan Mazzolini, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Greg Saber, reporter, WTAM 1100; Steve Gleydura, editor, Cleveland Magazine.
Rock Hall Induction Returns: The 2009 induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be conducted in Cleveland. It’ll be the first induction ceremony held here since 1997. Mayor Frank Jackson says the ceremony will return to Cleveland every three years thereafter. Clevelanders, who poured millions of dollars into the Rock Hall and Museum, chafed at the organization’s insistence on holding induction ceremonies in New York City. Their protests were finally heard.
Councilman Survives Recall: Voters in Cleveland’s 14th Ward have rejected a call to oust City Councilman Joe Santiago. Recall backers claimed Santiago was out of touch with constituents as he served his first term on council. But voters didn’t share that view. Santiago won the recall vote by a comfortable margin and turnout was less than ten per cent.
New Voting System: Election organizers are poised to replace a troubled touch-screen voting system in Cuyahoga County. Members of the Board of Elections deadlocked to a call to replace the touch-screen system with optical scan equipment. Secretary of State Brunner is expected to break the deadlock in favor of optical scan. The current system has been plagued with a long list of problems that caused vote-counting delays. Optical scan relies on hand-marked ballots counted by high-speed machines.
Death Penalty Ban: New Jersey repealed its death penalty law this week, becoming the first state to do so since the Supreme Court cleared the way for the resumption of the death penalty in 1976. New Jersey has eight prisoners on death row, but had not executed anyone since 1963. Executions nationwide hit a 13-year low in 2007. Death penalty opponents hope the repeal will lead to other states doing the same. Ohio has executed 26 people since 1976. Almost 200 people are on death row in Ohio.
