Roundtable: James Ewinger, reporter, The Plain Dealer; Harry Boomer, 19 Action News; Bill Livingston, sportswriter, The Plain Dealer.
Indians Eliminated: Indians summer turned into another winter of discontent for longsuffering fans of Cleveland baseball. The team that routed the Yankees in the ALDS suddenly found itself without hitting, pitching or defense in the latter stages of a winnable ALCS against the Red Sox. Instead, the Indians will watch the World Series on television along with fans who are accustomed to saying, “wait ‘til next year.”
Death on a Street Corner: Neighborhood passions erupted into a street corner fight on Cleveland’s east side. When it ended, 15 year old Demesha Sharp lay dead of stab wounds and three generations of a Cleveland family were in custody charged with the killing. As the teenage girl was buried this week, someone set fire to the home of the family accused in the stabbing.
‘No Snitch’ Ditches Akron Case: Akron police were forced to release their prime suspect in a January shooting because the star prosecution witness refused to testify. Prosecutors say they needed the testimony of Tyree Feaster to make their case against Recardo Travis who was to have faced a ten-count indictment in the gang-related shooting outside an Akron night spot. But Feaster has refused a judge’s order to testify and now faces a possible prison sentence for contempt of court.
Garfield Says No to Pit Bulls: The city of Garfield Heights enacted a law this week that banishes pit bulls. Residents who own the dogs will have to get rid of them. The city banned the dogs after some recent attacks. The Ohio Supreme Court cleared the way over the summer when it approved breed-specific bans. Pit bull owners protested, claiming the dogs aren’t vicious unless they’re trained to be. But the law defines the dogs as a threat to human health and safety.
Building Plan Tabled: Cuyahoga County leaders have delayed a plan to put up a new administration building near the corner of E. 9th and Euclid. They say the plan doesn’t make good dollars and sense given the county’s budget constraints. The news is encouraging for preservationists who hope to save the former Ameritrust building from demolition. They see the tower, designed by Marcel Breuer, as architecturally and historically significant.
