Newsmaker: Kenneth Trump, president, National School Safety and Security Services. A student with a gun and a grudge shot and wounded four people at SuccessTech high school in Cleveland this week. Two students and two teachers will recover from their wounds, but the boy with the gun will not. Asa Coon turned the gun on himself. Attention turns now to the apparently relaxed security at what’s considered an elite Cleveland high school and what could have been done to prevent the shootings.

Taxi Fares: Arriving passengers at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are about to be hit with a sizeable fare increase. Starting with the heavily-traveled Thanksgiving weekend, the fare for a trip from the airport to downtown Cleveland will rise to $44.00. Similar increases are applied to trips elsewhere in the metropolitan area. The city’s new policy will allow just three companies to ferry passengers from the airport. All cabs will be equipped with security cameras and electronic mapping devices.

GOP Debate: Republican presidential candidates met for a debate in Dearborn, Michigan. Front-runners Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney clashed fiercely over tax and spending policies, but the key difference in this debate was the presence for the first time of campaign newcomer Fred Thompson of Tennessee. Thompson, who just declared his candidacy, missed the first five GOP debates.

The Postseason Continues: The Indians face the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series, a level of success the Indians haven’t reached since 1998. The Indians earned the right to appear in the ALCS by dispatching the New York Yankees in the divisional series three games to one. If they can win the best-of-seven series with Boston, they’ll play in the World Series for the first time since 1997, seeking their first win since 1948.
