Newsmaker: Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians pitcher and member of National Baseball Hall of Fame. Feller, with his 266 major league victories is regarded by most fans as the greatest pitcher ever to take the mound for the Cleveland Indians. He would have had many more wins if not for the outbreak of World War II at the height of his career. Feller enlisted in the Navy the day after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the first major league player to do so in response to the attack. He served three years in the Navy, most of that as a gun captain aboard the battleship Alabama. Feller will describe his war experiences to Mr. Feagler as we continue our look back at a chapter in history being documented in the Ken Burns film, The War.

Roundtable: Kevin O’Brien, editorial writer, The Plain Dealer; Greg Saber, reporter, WTAM 1100.

General Motors Settlement: A two-day strike by members of the United Auto Workers led to agreement this week on a new labor contract. Union leaders say they got much of what they wanted, including more job security for the workforce. GM shifted administration of worker health benefits to the union, effectively removing a major liability from the company’s balance sheets. It’s still subject to approval by the courts and the rank-and-file.

Iran’s Leader: Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the U.S. this week for a speech at the United Nations and a Q&A at Columbia University. He told the U-N that his country plans to continue its nuclear program. At Columbia, he endured criticism from his host, Columbia president Lee Bollinger, who introduced him as a ‘petty and cruel dictator.’

Jaywalkers Beware: The city Cleveland and RTA are busy letting pedestrians know that Euclid Avenue is a no-fly zone. RTA police have kept busy issuing warnings and writing tickets to people crossing the not-quite-busy Euclid Corridor. The fine is a stiff $174 dollars--$55 for the fine, another $119 for court costs. RTA officials say the thinking behind the fines is safety and pedestrians and the special buses that will occupy Euclid Avenue starting next year.

Newsmaker II: Kerry Bubolz, president, Lake Erie Monsters. Professional hockey returns to Cleveland next month when the Lake Erie Monsters begin play at Quicken Loans Arena. The Monsters will play in the 29-team American Hockey League under the guidance of head coach Joe Sacco, a former NHL player. The Monsters open the season at home October 6.
