Newsmaker: Dr. Eugene Sanders, CEO, Cleveland Metropolitan School District: Cleveland school students scored gains in the most recent report card from the state Department of Education. The state now ranks the Cleveland schools as “continuous improvement,” a step ahead of “academic watch” last year. School leaders hope that’s a sign of better things to come. When a new school year begins late next week, students will notice some changes. A uniform dress code means they’ll all be wearing approximately the same outfits to class and some kids will be attending single-gender academies.

Roundtable: Chris Sheridan, editorial writer, The Plain Dealer; Mike Roberts, freelance journalist.

School Report Cards: The roundtable will continue the discussion of education. Urban districts around the state generally fared better on standard tests than they did the year before; and scores showed an upward trend for all public school students if one discounts new science and social studies tests for 5th and 8th graders. However, when those scores are added, the overall test score was lower.

Jackson’s Police Plan: With Cleveland’s homicide rate headed for a possible record, Mayor Frank Jackson this week unveiled a plan to put more officers on the street. He plans to transfer dozens of officers from duty at Hopkins Airport to street patrols. He’ll reduce the number of two-man patrol cars in favor of more cars staffed by just one officer. Jackson says the plan has been months in development.

Euclid Corridor Progress: The Euclid Corridor Project is said to be about a year away from completion. It’ll turn the historic thoroughfare into a bus rapid transit route stretching from Public Square to University Circle. Planners hope it will spur development and breathe new life into a stretch once known as Millionaires’ Row. But before progress can happen, merchants who’ve suffered a loss of business to bulldozers and cement mixers will have to wait, literally, for the dust to clear.

Newsmaker II: Randy Humphries, deputy director, Space Flight Operations, NASA-Glenn: Crew members of the Endeavor space shuttle may come back to earth without attempting to repair a gouge in the heat-resistant tiles covering the shuttle’s belly. It’s up to earth-based engineers to make the call. They were expected to do so after performing one last test. Randy Humphries will explain the options and the potential hazards for the crew.
