Roundtable: Kevin O’Brien, columnist, The Plain Dealer; Steve Gleydura, editor, Cleveland Magazine; Bill Livingston, sports columnist, The Plain Dealer.
Fired Over Residency: The city of Cleveland has fired four employees for being in violation of a city ordinance that requires city employees to have a Cleveland address. The firings are the first since a new state law took effect forbidding residency requirements. Those fired include two firefighters. The city says two members of the police department are also under investigation as possible non-residents. Cleveland has required residency of its employees since the early 1980s.
Theater-Goer Killed: Four juveniles face criminal charges in connection with the death of Virginia DiGiorgio, struck and killed by a speeding car last weekend in Cleveland’s theater district. DiGiorgio and her husband were walking to a theater when a reportedly stolen car driven by a 13-year-old boy struck her. The accident raised new questions about the safety of people visiting downtown Cleveland.
Cap the Innerbelt: A local business group wants to slap a lid on the I-90 Innerbelt. The Quadrangle says putting a ceiling on the freeway trench would create new space for economic development and remove a 50-year-old barrier between downtown and the near east side. Critics say the idea won’t fly until there’s more demand for downtown Cleveland real estate.
Quinn Queues for QB Quest: The Browns answered one of the big questions dogging training camp when they signed first-round draft pick Brady Quinn to a multi-year contract worth up to $30 million. Quinn faces an uphill battle for a starting job. He has to win the confidence of teammates and coaches and make up for the practice time he’s missed during his holdout. Currently, Quinn is a distant third on the Browns depth chart.
Bonds 756: San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds hammered career home run 756 deep into the right center field stands at SF’s AT&T Park Tuesday night to become baseball’s all-time home run king. The man whose career mark Bonds eclipsed, Henry Aaron, was sound asleep at the time; and to all appearances, major league baseball fans greeted the milestone with yawns of their own.
