Roundtable: Kevin O'Brien, columnist, The Plain Dealer; Harry Boomer, 19 Action News; Bob Dyer, columnist, Akron Beacon Journal.
Billions for Schools: A study done for the Ohio Department of Education suggests taxpayers need to be spending more, perhaps a lot more, on public schools. The study says school spending should increase as much as 31%, or just under $5 billion. It suggests higher pay for teachers and sets forth the possibility of year-round classes.
Military Hospitals: President Bush has named a bi-partisan panel to review conditions at military and VA hospitals around the country. And Congress has been holding hearings this week, with wrenching testimony on poor treatment and deplorable conditions at the Army's Walter Reed Medical Center.
Non-Union Officers: The city of Akron will hire dozens of part time non-union police officers to work during the busy summer months. City council approved the hirings over the objection of the police union, which says the city shouldn't be using officers with little experience. The union is threatening to sue, claiming the hirings violate the union contract. City officials say the extra officers are needed because many regulars are on vacation during the summer.
Make Every Vote Count: Hoping for better results with a Democratic majority in place, Cleveland Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones has reintroduced her Count Every Vote Act. It would make election day a national holiday, require a paper copy of every ballot cast, allow voters to register on election day and allow voters to cast a provisional ballot at any polling place in their county if they wished to avoid standing in line.
Boomer Health: When it comes to assessing their own physical well-being, baby boomers are doom-and-gloomers. A federally-funded university study says people from the baby boom generation were less likely to think their health was good or very good than people of their parents' generation. Researchers were unsure if boomer health had actually gone downhill or if this was a perception brought on by market-driven angst.
