Newsmaker: David Leopold, attorney. He's the lawyer for Manuel Bartsch, the northwest Ohio high school student the federal government would like to deport to his native Germany. He thought he was a U.S. citizen, but the government says he's not. For now, he's out of jail, where he spent Christmas, but he's not out of the woods. Further action could still lead to his deportation.

Roundtable panelists: Regina Brett and Sam Fulwood III, both columnists for the Plain Dealer; Bob Dyer, columnist for the Akron Beacon Journal.

Evolution vs Intelligent Design: The state Board of Education voted this week not to throw out a controversial science lesson plan that encourages students to debate the merits of the theory of evolution. Those who sided with a one-vote majority on the board rejected concerns that leaving the door open to discussion of intelligent design also leaves open the door to future litigation.

Cleveland Schools CEO: The Cleveland school board appointed Lisa Ruda as the interim CEO while they seek a replacement for Barbara Byrd-Bennett. Bennett moves to a new position at Cleveland State University next month. The Board also adopted a list of attributes it hopes to find in the person eventually hired.

No Class on Election Day: School leaders in Summit County are thinking about making election day a snow day for students. They've recommended that classes be called off when the polls are open because of concerns about the safety of kids when buildings are invaded by large numbers of adult voters. Election officials understand the concern for safety, but say finding new polling places would be difficult.

Alito Confirmation Hearings: The Senate Judiciary Committee spends the week in confirmation hearings for Supreme Court justice nominee Samuel Alito. Democrats tried repeatedly to portray Alito as hostile to abortion rights, but failed to get the judge to commit. A frustrated Senator Joe Biden said the hearing has been a waste of time. There are still hints the Democrats might try a filibuster.
