Roundtable panelists: Kevin O'Brien, columnist and Elizabeth Sullivan, foreign affairs writer, The Plain Dealer; Stan Bullard, Crain's Cleveland Business.
Hackett Smells a Rat: Ohio Democrat Paul Hackett, who pulled out of the U.S. Senate race last week, accused his former opponent of spreading rumors about his service in Iraq. In a TV interview, Hackett blamed Congressman Sherrod Brown for starting a word of mouth campaign that showed him in a bad light. The Brown camp denies Hackett's allegations.
Porting Company: President Bush wants to let a company based in Dubai run six major U.S. ports. Critics on both sides of the aisle hope to scuttle the plan, pointing at a threat to U.S. security. Ports such as those in New York and Philadelphia were operated by a British company that sold out to a state-run enterprise in Dubai. Bush says Dubai is an ally and the deal would not happen if there was any doubt about security.
Reading, Writing and Remington: Schools exist to turn kids into straight shooters, but at least one lawmaker wants to take that expression more literally. Representative Ron Hood is suggesting making a gun safety course part of the high school curriculum. Hunting groups say it’s a good idea; many school officials say they’d rather pass.
Praying Council: Town fathers in Hartville, near Canton, want to open each city council meeting with a prayer, saying other cities are doing it. Bad idea, says the Mayor; that would be inviting a lawsuit. Too bad, said council, we’ll do it anyway.
Newsmaker: RTA General Manager Joe Calabrese: The operator of Cleveland’s buses and rapid trains are mulling over the first fare increase since 1993. Without it, RTA says it will face deficits by the end of next year. Like many other businesses, regional transit has been hit hard by rising fuel and health care costs.
