Newsmaker: Woodrow Whitlow, Jr., PhD, Director of NASA-Glenn Research Center. NASA Glenn learned recently that it will play a major role in developing the next generation of manned space vehicles. Glenn will develop the craft’s service module, designed to provide power to the crew that will explore the moon and the propulsion to return the crew to earth. The project appears to solidify Glenn’s place in NASA’s orbit for years to come.

Roundtable: Chris Sheridan, editorial writer, the Plain Dealer; Kevin O’Brien, editorial writer, the Plain Dealer; Rev. Marvin McMickle, Antioch Baptist Church.

Use of Force: A special prosecutor exonerated Cleveland police officers this week in fatal shootings dating back to early 2004. Retired Judge C. Ellen Connally investigated the five shootings, concluding that the officers who fired the shots were acting according to established city policies. Some of the shootings, especially that of teenager Brandon McCloud last year, sparked protests by the family and community leaders.

Terrorist Leader Killed: U.S. forces bombed a house north of Baghdad, killing the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Mosab al-Zarqawi. He was said to be al-Qaida’s second most powerful leader. President Bush said, "the ideology of terror has lost one of its visible and aggressive leaders." Several world leaders lauded the death of Zarqawi, but cautioned it won’t end terrorist attacks in Iraq.

Gay Marriage Amendment: The U.S. Senate rejected a call for a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. A test vote fell far short of the two-thirds majority required for passage. A key House leader said a similar measure is likely to come before the House next month.

Affirmative Action: The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a pair of cases that address the issues of race and affirmative action. The cases center on how far public schools can go to achieve racial balance in classrooms. It’s the first significant challenge to affirmative action since the Court ruled in favor of a racially-conscious admissions policy at the University of Michigan.
