Mayor Bets on Slots: Cleveland’s mayor hopes slot machine casinos will provide a big payout for the city. Mayor Frank Jackson endorsed the Learn and Earn proposal on the November ballot that will allow casinos in downtown Cleveland and at racetracks around Ohio. Proceeds from the slots would pay for college scholarships and economic development. In the future, Cleveland would have the option expanding gambling to allow for full casinos.

Voinovich on Taxes: Senator George Voinovich wants to raise taxes at least temporarily to pay for the war in Iraq. Voinovich has broken with President Bush and the majority of Republicans in the past on the issue of taxes and spending. Spokesmen for the Ohio Senator say his stand won’t undermine the campaigns of colleagues who continue to push tax cuts.

Cleveland Public Power: The Plain Dealer reports Cleveland Public Power has failed to collect more than $20 million in unpaid bills. In most cases, the city failed to shut off the power of late payers who owed hundreds of dollars in overdue bills. The city says it’s turned over some accounts to collection agencies, but is not anticipating getting much money back.

Senior Driving: An 80-year-old driver from Geauga County might lose her drivers license for up to eight years after causing a chain-reaction accident that killed a family of four. A prosecutor says the authorities will seek the suspension, but no jail time for the Bainbridge Township woman at fault. The accident has renewed the debate over whether elderly drivers should undergo routine vision testing.

Newsmaker: Brad Whitehead, project coordinator The Fund for Our Economic Future and Voices & Choices: Thousands of Northeast Ohioans have taken part in the Voices and Choices project, aimed at identifying solutions to economic and social problems that plague greater Cleveland. The project is set to culminate with a town hall meeting over the weekend. Mr. Feagler will speak with a project official about the findings and likely courses of action.
