Newsmaker: Steve Litt, Art and Architecture Critic, the Plain Dealer. The Cleveland Museum of Art’s board of trustees this week voted to go ahead with the first phase of its expansion plans. The $160 million first phase is part of a $258-million dollar project that will renovate the museum’s important historical spaces, expand its exhibition space, and create a glitzy new entryway.
Roundtable Panel: Bill Rice, ideastream; Ned Whelan, Whelan Communications; Tom Feran, Plain Dealer columnist.
Schools Renovation in Jeopardy: While the Art Museum is expanding, the Cleveland school system is contracting and may be forced to scale back its ambitious renovation program. Enrollment is expected to keep on dropping so state officials who are bankrolling the construction are telling the school system it’s time to re-think their plans.
Film Festival Flap: The Cleveland International Film Festival is supposed to be one long party. But it’s not all fun and games. The union representing projectionists is trying to get film makers and movie goers alike to boycott the festival because the union projectionists are not being used at the Tower City Cinemas where the event is being held.
Rather’s Swan Song: Long-time anchor Dan Rather did his final regular broadcast on the CBS Evening News this week. He steps down after 24 years in the anchor chair last held by Walter Cronkite. Rather’s credibility took a crushing blow just before the election when he aired forged documents that put President Bush in a bad light.
Dear Deer: An Independence resident is fighting city hall over his right to feed the deer. The city accuses Keith Kunde of feeding corn to deer that wander near his home, a violation of city law. Kunde says he’s going to do it anyway and risk a $250 fine.
