Roundtable panelists: Chris Sheridan, editorial writer of the Plain Dealer; Harry Boomer, 19 Action News; Larry Klayman, attorney, Walter & Haverfield.
Campbell vs Jackson: Cleveland voters have narrowed the field of candidates in the Mayor’s race to just two. Incumbent Jane Campbell will face the president of Cleveland City Council, Frank Jackson, who got 4500 more votes than Campbell in the primary. The candidates have almost exactly a month to sway voters before the November 8th election. But there’s some question whether voters care. Just 16 per cent of them made it to the polls on primary day.
Miers Appointed to Supreme Court: President Bush reached deep into his inner circle to appoint Harriet Miers to replace retiring Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Miers is the White House counsel and a long-time friend of the President. Beyond those facts, little is known about her; and virtually nothing is known about her views on debates that might come before the court.
A Carrot and a Stick for the Teacher: The governor of Massachusetts wants to stop giving raises to teachers based on their academic accomplishments. Instead, Mitt Romney says teachers should be rewarded according to the accomplishments of their students. Merit raises for teachers are part of a larger education package Romney is pushing in his state. Teacher unions say they’re opposed.
The Play’s the Thing: School officials in a small eastern Ohio district sparked debate when they decided the musical “Godspell” was unsuitable while approving a show about school violence called “Bang, Bang, You’re Dead.” School leaders agreed “Godspell” raises church-state separation issues. But the school board overruled the superintendent and will allow performance of “Bang, Bang.”
