Newsmaker: Mary McNamara, Field Operations Coordinator for the Greater Cleveland Access to Benefits Coalition. Starting this week, seniors are able to sign up for the new Medicare prescription drug benefit. But seniors are finding that they face a dizzying array of drug plans, not all of which would suit their needs. We’ll straighten out some of the confusion.

Roundtable panelists: Elizabeth Sullivan, foreign affairs writer for the Plain Dealer; freelance journalist Mike Roberts; and Bob Dyer, columnist of the Akron Beacon Journal

Nate Gray: Former Cleveland business consultant Nate Gray is now a federal prison inmate, sentenced this week to 15 years in prison for his role in a bribery and corruption scheme that touched three states. Gray’s trial dangled tantalizing hints that prosecutors are after bigger fish and they acknowledged after the sentencing that the criminal investigation is still underway.

Knight-Ridder on the Block? Stock in the Knight-Ridder newspaper chain has risen in recent days on talk that the chain is for sale. Declining readership and competition from other media have left the owner of the Akron Beacon Journal, Miami Herald and Philadelphia Inquirer looking for a better business model; or perhaps, a way out.

Slow Boat to Canada: Shiver me timbers, eh? Some business interests think there’s potential for a ferry service between the North Coast and the Great White North. There’s enough interest that a second proposal emerged this week for a Canada ferry that would depart a dock near Mentor Headlands State Park and land in Port Burwell, Ontario. This competes with an earlier Cleveland-to-Port Stanley proposal.

Bush, Cheney Respond to Critics: President Bush and Vice-President Cheney lashed back this week at Senate critics of the administration’s Iraq war policy. The Senate this week voted to demand periodic reports on the progress of the war while rejecting a call to set a date for troop withdrawal. Bush said Senators are playing politics with the US-led occupation. Cheney called war opponents opportunists.
