Newsmaker: Michael Scharf, Case Western University law professor: The trial of Iraqi ex-dictator Saddam Hussein got off to a rocky start this week. Saddam and his associates are accused of crimes against humanity stemming from the torture and killing of scores of Iraqis after a failed 1980’s assassination attempt. Professor Scharf helped train some of the court personnel to be involved in this and upcoming trials. He’ll talk about the slow progress and discuss with Mr. Feagler what might be next.
Roundtable panelists: Kevin O’Brien, deputy editorial director for the Plain Dealer; Shannon Pettypiece, technology writer of Crain’s Cleveland Business; Joe Yachanin, columnist, Sun Newspapers.
Charter Schools: Lawyers on both sides of charter schools argued their cases before the Ohio Supreme Court this week. At issue is whether it’s constitutional for public money to pay for privately-operated schools. Thousands of families have placed children in charter schools, mostly in big cities like Cleveland, thinking they’re a better place to learn.
Bush on the Offensive: President Bush went to the U.S Naval Academy this week to fire a broadside at critics of the Iraq war. He said those who advocate an “artificial timetable” for troop withdrawal are “sincere, but sincerely wrong.” He laid out a strategy for continuing the offensive against the insurgents, but nothing in the way of a withdrawal plan.
Streetcars on the Waterfront: Sounds like a title for Brando, but it’s a plan to put old-fashioned streetcars on the RTA’s Waterfront Line. Organizers are working on a plan to move vintage trolley cars that used to be in the defunct Trolleyville museum to a downtown location where they’ll be available for service on the Waterfront Line. Streetcars have been gone from Cleveland streets for 50 years.
O, Holiday Tree! Official Washington is going to call a spade a spade; or, in this case, a Christmas tree. At the urging of House speaker Dennis Hastert, the tall Christmas tree on the Capitol grounds will be known as such, rather than the politically-correct title, Holiday Tree. Christmas tree it used to be, but the name changed in the 90’s.
