Why does anyone still die of cancer? Award-winning filmmaker Linda Garmon shares the story of her husband’s battle with the disease. She also documents other cancer stories that take place in the same hospital and institutions where her husband was treated.

Part science, part personal catharsis, part character-driven storytelling, this powerful documentary uncovers the truth about cancer and tell us where we stand in fighting the battle against the disease. Immediately after, news journalist and breast cancer survivor Linda Ellerbee hosts a 30-minute follow-up discussion, “Take One Step: A Conversation About Cancer with Linda Ellerbee.” The panel covers the importance of prevention and screenings, what to expect if you or a loved one is diagnosed and how to live with the disease.

During the broadcast, WVIZ/PBS viewers will have an opportunity to speak directly with health professionals about their questions and concerns. Free resource guides will also be available from ideastream and The Gathering Place.

Skin cancer is the most common and the most preventable type of cancer. More than one million people in the United States will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year.

Damage due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the biggest culprit linked to skin cancer. However, the majority of skin cancers can be prevented with proper protection from the sun. Early detection is critical to the successful treatment of skin cancer.

Appointments for the skin screenings are scheduled on a first-come, first serve basis. Individuals must call to schedule an appointment.
