WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

DeWine/Brown Senate Contest & Debate Preview
One of the hottest senate races in the country is taking place in Ohio. Sherrod Brown, Democratic congressman from Avon, is challenging Ohio's senior senator Republican Mike DeWine. The two men face off in a debate produced by ideastream in collaboration with The Plain Dealer, the Dayton Daily News, the Columbus Dispatch and the Public Radio and Television Statehouse News Bureau on Friday, Oct. 13 at 8:00 PM. On the next edition of Ideas, we look at the race less than a month before the election. Poll show the two men are in a statistical dead heat. We look at what are the issues that could make or break either man's candidacy and the impact "GOP fatigue" could have on the election's outcome. The debate can be seen and heard live Friday, Oct. 13 at 8:00 PM on WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Health Reporter Elaine Falk looks at one of the newest procedures for breast reconstruction following mastectomy. While breast reconstruction has always been considered an important part of recovery, many traditional methods have drawbacks and limitations. Now a newer method, known as DIEP FLAP, is getting a lot of attention because the procedure allows patients to use their own tissue to create a new breast without sacrificing any of their muscle. So far, a limited number of doctors are performing the surgery, but Elaine sits down with a surgeon from the Cleveland Clinic to talk about the advantages and drawbacks. We'll also hear one woman's story of her struggle with cancer and the decisions she faces following a double mastectomy.

Dealing with Lead Paint Poisoning
What is Cuyahoga County doing that the rest of the country wants to know about? With help from a grant from the Saint Luke's Foundation, the country has developed a unique approach to dealing with the problems of lead paint poisoning. Long a serious problem in older homes, many of which are in the central cities, lead poisoning can lead to a number of life long learning and other disabilities in children. The county's program has been so successful that they have been asked by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta to share that success with health officials from around the country perhaps to be used as a model in other cities.
