WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Paying for Schools
There is a new school funding initiative that would revolutionize the way we pay for schools. If backers can gather enough signatures, voters will be asked in November to pass an amendment to the Ohio constitution taking the power to funds schools away from the state legislature and giving it to the state board of education. Is this an idea whose time as come, and would this change really make a difference in your child's education?

Minimum Wage
Hundreds of thousands of Ohioans got a raise on January 1st when the new higher state minimum wage went into effect. Voters passed the hike last November. During the campaign, opponents said upping the minimum wage would really help lift people out of poverty but it would hurt small business. Has it hurt business and are low wager earners really any better off? We'll ask Amy Hauser of the group Ohio Policy Matters

Inside the Idea Center
Recently students from across Northeast Ohio came together both inside the Westfield Insurance Studio Theater for an event we called Inside the Idea Center. Students were given the rare opportunity to have an open, no rules conversation with Adam Guettel, composer of Light in the Piazza currently running at the Palace Theater in Playhouse Square. We'll have some highlights of the event, which was broadcast on WVIZ and WCPN's Around Noon. Dee Perry hosted the event.
