WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

New Head for Port of Cleveland
The Port of Cleveland opened the international shipping season late last week, when the 9,600 ton MV Isolda arrived from the Netherlands. If this year surpasses last, we could see more than 1,100 vessels tied up at the docks along the north shore - and that translates to money and jobs for people who live here. But as the Port celebrates a record 2006 season with an 8% increase in tonnage, it also continues to defend itself from detractors who feel the quasi-governmental body has too much influence... and too little oversight. But this year brings a new man to the helm, as Port President Adam Wasserman steps in. Rick Jackson talked with him about the needs, the goals, and the impact of the Port Authority.

Making Cleveland a Bio-Medical Leader
Not long ago, the region's biggest employers were automobile manufacturers, tire makers, and steel companies. But those big company jobs have been drying up, and the biggest employers here now are hospitals. Maybe that's not a bad thing, as local leaders are hoping to make Northeast Ohio a mecca for the bio-medical industry. The trouble is, just about every other city in the country has the same plan. ideastream's Mark Urycki looks into whether the proposal is possible.
