WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Regional Racism
Talk of regionalism in Northeast Ohio has typically focused on tax and service sharing between communities. Because issues such as education and housing haven't been as big a part of the conversation, the African American community has been skeptical of regionalism. ideastream's reporter Tasha Flournoy talks about a new report issued by The Presidents' Council - an Ohio black executives group - that looks at how regionalism can impact the black community. The two-year study was conducted by consultants from Policy Link and Ohio State University's Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.

Euclid Corridor
Euclid Corridor Construction continues, and yes, progress is being made. With some exclusive transit lane roads rebuilt, it's a great start - but what else is going on with the new silver line - as greater Cleveland RTA moves forward with the $200 million project? And as RTA plans for increased rider ship - what about the businesses that have been dealing with construction for the past year and a half? Will they survive?

Lorain School Funding
Lorain's School Board says they didn't know the city's schools were in such financial crisis. A former treasurer failed to warn board members that the district would face a $4.75 million deficit this year, according to newspaper accounts. Now, 246 teachers have been laid off, as well as some administrators, as the district struggles amidst declining enrollment, and the budget shortfall. Some say the school board was asleep at the wheel. Others blame the now-retired treasurer. Some fingers point to charter schools as part of the problem. Whatever the cause, it's going to be a tough year for Lorain's teachers, students, and administrators.
