WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Solar 2007
Pressure on the state of Ohio to adopt stricter codes promoting renewable energy is mounting. Governor Ted Strickland reportedly likes ideas which involve upgrading energy efficiency - particularly from renewable resources such as wind, and solar power. So in the midst of debate from Columbus and around the state, the timing of the 36th Annual Conference of the American Solar Energy Society couldn't be better. Here in Cleveland this week are nearly 2,000 engineers, consultants, academics, and other scientists, all looking to advance America's understanding - and it's use - of power that is derived from sources heretofore lightly considered. Why Cleveland? Are we really that cutting edge? Answering that question is a good place to start.

President Bush in Cleveland
President Bush visited Cleveland Tuesday to support his domestic policies on the economy and healthcare. But, his trip came amid continuing concerns over Iraq. He stopped at a GrafTech International, a Parma manufacturing company that produces alternative fuel cells, and visited the Cleveland Clinic. Later, Bush held a forum with business leaders where he was expected to be challenged on whether the troop surge in Iraq is worth continuing. ideastream’s economics reporter Tasha Flournoy followed the President and recaps the highlights of his visit to Cleveland.

New Mental Health Facility
Plans are underway to build a new State Mental Health Hospital in Northeast Ohio. Architects have been hired, blue prints are being drafted, all without a specific location. Since the majority of the hospital’s patients are Cleveland residents, local mental health advocates say the hospital should stay in the city. But that’s meeting some resistance. Meanwhile, some Cleveland suburbs are jumping at the chance to get the hundreds of construction and professional jobs that would come with the project. ideastream’s health reporter, Lisa Ann Pinkerton brings us a special report.
