WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Teaching Babies to Survive in Water
Today, 11 infants will drown in the United States. It happens in pools, on beaches, even in bathtubs. But experts say that babies as young as six months can save themselves. After nearly 30 years of research, a method has been developed to teach even our very littlest loved ones, how to survive in the water.

For more information on the Infant Swimming Resource visit http://www.infantswim.com or call (440) 729-1463.

Mayor Jackson's State of the City Address
The city of Cleveland has a new mayor, who this week tackles it's ills and it's benefits in his initial "State Of The City" address (12:30 PM on Thursday, Feb. 23). ideastream reporters will cover the event, and the ideas team will be joined that evening by members of the Cleveland City council, who will help us digest the meanings they see behind the words of Mayor Jackson, and who will share the their particular takes on his ideas.

Political Ads
Karen Kasler from our Statehouse News Bureau in Columbus will join us with the latest reaction from a scathing political advertisement from Ken Blackwell. The ad takes jabs at Blackwell's opponent in the gubernatorial primary, Jim Petro and Ohio Governor Bob Taft. Karen will also bring details of the many statewide issues that will likely be on the ballot this November - everything from how we fund education to putting spending limits on state lawmakers.

Cleveland Art Legend Lost
We lost an art legend this month - celebrated artist Charles Sallée died last week at age 94. He was the first African American to graduate from the Cleveland Institute of Art, but perhaps he's best known for his work as an artist for the WPA, the Depression Era federal art project. In the twilight of his life, just last spring, Dee Perry, the host of the WVIZ/PBS show Applause, caught up with Charles Sallée. He opened his home and shared some great stories. We enjoyed that piece so much; we thought it appropriate to share it with you again this week. We contacted his family and they very much agreed.
