WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Suburban Boom
What Cuyahoga County suburb is in the midst of its largest building boom since the middle 60s, adding new housing, business, retail and even a nationally recognized tech center all at once? We'll be visiting there to see not only the new growth, but to hear about a new attitude, in a city that you probably don't know a whole lot about. We'll also talk with an urban specialist as to whether the lessons learned in this one inner-ring suburb could translate to other areas of the region as well.

Ohio WAGS
They call them dogs with jobs. For years now dogs have been trained to be skilled companions for the disabled. But very few agencies provide these dogs for children. Until now. Ohio WAGS, a new Northeast Ohio non-profit, was started just to help these little ones in need.

Child Autism
Nearly 1 in every 166 babies born in the United States will be diagnosed with autism. This mysterious developmental disorder is increasing so rapidly that some experts predict by the end of the next decade there will be 4 million autistic Americans. As with many misunderstood disorders there are stereotypes, but those who deal with the autism will tell you that each child is an individual with the ability to learn and function. If your child or someone you love has autism here are some links that can help.

Predatory Lending
The number of people in Ohio who lose their homes to foreclosure is staggering - more than 24,000 last year alone. Causes vary, but increasingly, the fault lies with predatory lenders - people who are in the business of making high risk loans for maximum returns... returns for themselves. Ohio leads the nation in forclosures and Cuyahoga County leads the state. Jeffery Dillman is the executive director of the Housing Research and Advocacy Center in Cleveland, which deals with a range of housing issues including foreclosure. ideastream's Lisa Ann Pinkerton talks to Jeffery about ways you can protect yourself against unscrupulous lenders.
