WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

So if you're tired of spending money at the pump, we have a series of stories for you about ways that people are beating the gas price crunch.
Sharing a Car
In Ohio City, we've found a company that allows you and about 50 of your friends to share a car. Imagine: no insurance payments, no gasoline fill-ups, no condo fees for having your own parking space. Cleveland is actually one of less than two dozen cities where the idea of sharing cars is working. We'll introduce you to the man who brought it to town.

Used Grease as Fuel
In Oberlin, a young man with a dream is turning diesel cars into vegetable oil burners. A process to convert cars to run on used grease is catching on, and as we revisit a story previously covered, we find success is catching up to the folks at Full Circle Fuels. Got a VW or a Mercedes you want to convert? These are the guys!

No More Gas Car
Imagine if a car could take you to and from work and on errands for only two cents a mile, without you ever paying for gas again! Such a car actually exists. It's electric and it's handmade right here in Northeast Ohio. We'll examine the advantages and limitations of this NMG, or No More Gas car, and analyze the emerging market for very small extremely efficient automobiles.

Generation Next Road Trip
It's roadtrip season - but that isn't the reason a PBS RV hit the highway recently. No, this bus is on the road to unravel a generation. The Jim Lehrer Newshour team has loaded up a bus, traveling from coast to coast to talk to 16-25 year olds, to find out what it is that makes their generation tick - how they feel about technology, debt, gay rights. Here's a hint, it's not how their parents felt. Veteran CNN and PBS journalist Judy Woodruff leads the Generation Next project. She's talked to young people in indie rock clubs, poetry slams and recently spent some time here in Ohio. She'll join us on this week's Ideas.
