WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Stem Cells
When President Bush vetoed legislation on embryonic stem cell usage, it was closely watched here in Northeast Ohio. The region boasts some of the world leaders in advanced stem cell research, and the impact of politics on science could be profound. We'll look at what goes on here in the region regarding Stem Cell research, and discuss what Ohio stands to lose if legislation blocks dollars needed for advancement. Among our guests is Dr. Stanton Gerson, chief of the division of hematology/oncology in the Department of Medicine at CASE Western Reserve University.

New Health Care Services
The health care industry accounts for $1.5 trillion of business in the U.S. But who can really put a value on health? It's important to every one of us - so important, that consumers are demanding new and different health care and finding it. From the cushy to the economical, new health care services are sprouting up all around the country. ideastream's Elaine Falk reports on two of these trends that have just arrived in Northeast Ohio:
"Boutique" doctors. It's a doctors office with a long list of perks, but it also has a heftier price tag. Now, for a membership fee, patients can have a "boutique" doctor that not only provides V.I.P. service, but promises 24-hour access, complete with his or her personal cell phone number.
Stop-n-shop. While some health care consumers are looking for luxury, others want health care that can fit their budget. Mini medical clinics have sprouted up at supermarkets in the Akron area offering service for a fraction of the price. But not everybody is a fan. Find out why on the next Ideas.
