WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

Increased Cardiovascular Center at UH
University Hospitals and Case are making a big splash with the announcement of an increased Cardiovascular Center at its main campus. Leading the revamped department will be Dr. Dan Simon, recruited to Cleveland from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He'll speak with Rick Jackson about the ambitious plans the hospital has for increased surgeries, teaching, and research, here in Cleveland. Simon's entire research team and several additional heart doctors from BWH will also transfer here to greater Cleveland.
Voices and Choices
Our coverage of the Voices and Choices campaign continues, as we look into the aspect of attracting new businesses to Northeast Ohio. Director Tom Waltermire from Team NEO will be here to talk about the efforts being made, and Rick will profile the software company Knotice, whose founders left California for the friendlier confines of Akron, and have grown to the point that they are now adding staff to their operation.
Cleveland Named Poorest Big City... Again
With the designation of Cleveland as the nation's poorest city once again, we'll re-examine the idea of poverty, its' causes and impact. The U.S. Census Bureau found that 2005 numbers indicate 32.4% of the residents in the City of Cleveland are living below the federal poverty line - the highest rate in America. Our continuing conversation about the Voices and Choices campaign examines part of the issue, and ideas also spoke with noted author and Harvard University Sociology Professor Dr. William Julius Wilson.
Back to School Time
Break out the book bags, get those pencils sharpened... it's back to school time! Kids are clamoring into the classroom once again and parents are clamoring to keep up. How can parents make the transition easy and safe for their kids? To find out we'll turn to a school nurse that has been helping kids adjust year after year. Karen Mascolo from the Akron Children's Hospital School Health Program joins us on the next ideas.
