WVIZ/PBS ideastream®: Ideas

Ideas is a series of special one-hour programs produced and presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream®. Topics for each episode are guided by ideastream’s “Listening Project,” a series of surveys, town hall meetings and other community-focused activities. Subjects such as education, the economy and jobs, the environment, economic development, civic affairs, and health and human services are prominently featured. Each Ideas episode also serves as the keystone for a compilation of related programming on 90.3 WCPN, WVIZ/PBS and content on ideastream websites. The goal of this program series is to focus audience attention on an issue or topic of broad community interest. These stories, segments, and entire programs are distinguished by their depth and quality of journalism and the creative storytelling ideastream audiences have come to expect and appreciate.

First Debate
This week on Ideas, we take a look at the first debate between the two major candidate for governor of Ohio - Democrat Ted Strickland and Republican Ken Blackwell. We'll have a panel of local political experts on hand to analyze what was said and how the debate set the tone for the rest of the fall campaign for governor of Ohio.

Ohio Ballot Issues Discussion
Public Radio and Television Statehouse New Bureau Manager Karen Kasler will join us to her insights on some of the other ballot issues Ohioans will vote on in November. Among the more controversial, a proposal to allow slot machines in racetracks across Ohio. Proponents claim all profits will go towards funding college tuition for Ohio students, while opponents say this is just another way to introduce more gambling into Ohio. Other issues up for a vote and discussion are the proposed increase in the state minimum wage, and two issues that will determine if Ohio will be a smoke-free state or a state that simply has few places to smoke.

Voices and Choices
Ideas continues its coverage of the Voices and Choice project this week with a discussion about the challenges of government fragmentation and how northeast Ohio plans to address the growing problem of sprawl. Guests will include Hunter Morrison of Youngstown State University, David Beach of Eco-City, Bay Village Mayor Debbie Sutherland and Steve Brooks, associate director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron.
