The longtime Ohio lawmaker who became known as “Senator No” has died. Howard Metzenbaum of Cleveland made millions in the parking lot business, then spent 18 years on Capitol Hill fighting big business on behalf of workers and against corporate tax breaks and pork-barrel programs.
March roared in with what’s being called the Blizzard of ’08, but as bad as it was, for many Ohioans it’s just a memory. 1,200 crews worked 12 hour shifts for ODOT and made quick work of the record setting snow, which topped 20 inches in some parts of the state. Foreclosure numbers keep climbing each quarter in Ohio. The state has launched a new campaign called “Save the Dream” to help people at risk of losing their homes.
In Ohio people can be fired, bounced from an apartment or refused access to public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender identity. A new bill on that topic has the support of a sitting governor, and a Republican lawmaker has joined in. Here to discuss the pros and cons of the bill is Lynne Bowman, Executive Director of Equality Ohio, a gay rights lobbying group, and Barry Sheets with Citizens for Community Values, which worked for Ohio’s marriage-defining constitutional amendment and last year’s crackdown on strip clubs.
