The governor promised to erase a $733 million shortfall without hiking taxes or tapping the rainy day fund. Now Gov. Ted Strickland says he’s done it with 1,500 to 2,700 layoffs and big cuts in some large state departments. A $73 million cut to the Ohio Lottery brings up perhaps the most controversial part of the governor’s proposal - an expansion of games offered by the Lottery, including a state-run keno game for bars and other venues. And the numbers of babies born too early are rising, and premature birth is costly not only to those babies and to their families, but also to the nation as a whole – it’s estimated premature births cost the US at least $26 billion a year. The March of Dimes Ohio has recruited lawmakers and health experts to create what it’s calling the Ohio Prematurity Caucus to increase awareness about premature births. The chair of that campaign is Dr. Jay Iams, a professor at Ohio State University and an expert in high-risk and early births, and State Senator Keith Faber of Celina, one of the more than 20 lawmakers who is part of the “prematurity caucus”.
