There is a new leader of the Democrats in the Senate, following a coup of sorts amongst the 12 members of the minority party. Senate Minority Leader Teresa Fedor of Toledo and assistant minority leader Tom Roberts of Dayton were ousted, replaced by the longest serving lawmaker at the Statehouse, Sen. Ray Miller of Columbus, and Sen. Shirley Smith of Cleveland respectively. On the other side of the aisle, the number three ranking Republican in the Senate, Randy Gardner of Bowling Green resigned to take Rep. Bob Latta’s seat in the House. It may be the first time this has ever happened in Ohio - twice this week, an inmate was released from Ohio's death row. 43-year old Ken Richey walked out of prison a few days ago... a few months after an appeals court ruled his original lawyers mishandled his case. Richey talked briefly with Karen Kasler. And the controversial case of John Spirko Jr. may finally be over. After seven reprieves from two governors, Spirko has escaped lethal injection permanently with a commutation from Gov. Strickland... just two weeks before his latest execution date. This is an election year, obviously for president and for Congress, but also for all 99 members of the Ohio House and half of the Ohio Senate. Rep. Chris Redfern, chair of the Ohio Democratic Party, and Rep. Kevin DeWine, deputy director of the Ohio Republican Party, preview the races in Ohio in 2008 – from the presidential contest on down.
