Living with Cancer: Celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day

Sunday, June 6, 2004 is National Cancer Survivors Day©.
Communities across the country will pause to celebrate the lives of people who are living with a history of cancer, and focus attention on cancer survivorship.

To mark this date locally, ideastream and The Gathering Place are partnering with Northeast Ohio community organizations and healthcare facilities to present a special broadcast event, “Living with Cancer: Celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day” featuring:

• A special 3-hour collection of national and local programs
• Inspirational stories of individuals and families living with cancer
• Live, in-studio appearances by local social and healthcare organization representatives
• Information about local resources to help ease the journey for patients and their loved ones

Programs scheduled for the June 6 broadcast on WVIZ/PBS ideastream include:

Grab Hold of the Reins: Women & Cancer
Three long-term breast and ovarian cancer survivors are profiled, with focus on how they reclaimed their identity, sexuality and femininity after the assault of cancer.

Courageous Portraits: Living with Cancer
A candid and sensitive look at the lives of three patients who have been challenged by lung and ovarian cancer. Their inspirational stories reveal how they have coped with the illness and the side effects of their treatments.

Living with Cancer
The stories of three cancer patients and how they lived and, in one case, died with cancer. It’s an inside glimpse of a cancer patient’s trials, tribulations, and perspective on life’s priorities.

“Living with Cancer: Celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day” is presented by WVIZ/PBS ideastream and The Gathering Place, in association with: Akron Children’s Hospital, American Cancer Society, The Cleveland Foundation, Deaconess Community Foundation, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, MetroHealth Medical Center, The Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center.
