history of the cuyahoga river

Where does the river start? ----How long has it been here? ----How did it begin?

Finally, a little time after Ohio became a state, in 1803, the Cuyahoga Valley contained the first two permanent settlements along the Cuyahoga River. Those first settlements were Independence and Brecksville. Soon, these people built a canal along side of the river. This canal was used like a water filled superhighway.

The canal was used to transport people and all kinds of goods and soon more people came to live along the river.

Well, after that building and growing just didn't stop. Railroads were then built along the river.

Industries were built and the river became the center of all kinds of activity, most of which the water creatures and I did not like. You probably know pretty much of the story from here on.

Through the years the Cuyahoga got pretty dirty and at several different times it just flat out caught fire. It made us famous but not the way we wanted to be.

In the early 1970s, a bunch of people decided that enough was enough and it was time to clean the old baby up.

They made some laws that said factories couldn't pollute the river anymore and now they just work at making those laws keep this river clean.

My friends and I are happier, and we hope that you, the people of the river, help to keep us happy.
