Water Monitoring:

Take A Dip”-Join students from around the world in this Environmental Collaborative Project and team up to test the quality and research the cultural significance of fresh water. From March 27 - June 2, 2006, you will have the opportunity to compare the water quality of your local river, stream, lake or pond and the stories and practices dealing with water in your community with other fresh water sources around the world. Within these pages, you will find valuable resources you can use with this project including the data collection worksheet which your students can use to record information found in the field.

LaMotte water quality testing kits- The LaMotte company offers the water monitoring kit that was used in the creation of the water monitoring activity described in this site. You may purchase the "Low Cost Water Monitoring Kit" (Code 5886) via the information found on the LaMotte website.

Acid Lake” is another EcoKids game in which the students can affect an imaginary lake’s acidity (ph level) by adding acid rain. Students see the effect on a PH Scale as well as the effect higher levels of acid rain have on various species within the lake. The first species to be effected are the frogs, eggs, and tadpoles; then the crawfish and then a few species of fish. The game continues until all aquatic life disappears from the lake and ends by explaining that other animals (living on land) that once depended on food from the lake have moved onto other areas in order to locate food.

In the "Life Depends on Water" website there is a section entitled "Monitoring Water Quality" which explains why water monitoring is important and who (locally and nationally) conducts the tests. This section also contains a list of several career and volunteer opportunities that are available within these organizations.

Raindrops To Rivers - This Professional Development Resource uses authentic video of classrooms to showcase high quality instruction on watersheds and nonpoint source pollution. Also included are links to lesson materials, and additional resources.
