Funding Your Trip

Convincing an organization to foot the bill for your personal adventure trip isn't easy.  But outdoor-sports enthusiasts (not just world-class explorers) with novel trip ideas can win funding.

BALANCE BAR GRANTS
www.balance.com/grants
$500 to $10,000 Explain how your trip will allow you to surpass your own emotional and physical limits.  Serious athletic chops aren't required.  Think Rudy. Anne Krancus, a 24 year-old hiking enthusiast, won $2,500 to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.  Her longest previous trek? One week.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORERS

$2,000 to $10,000 Present a story idea with strong visual potential, not just a trip idea.  The National Geographic Society Expeditions Council likes projects suited to television and magazine coverage. White-water racers Andrew McEwan and Middy Tilghman, both 22, got $6,000 to kayak the Back, Hayes, and Quoich Rivers through the Barrenlands of northern Canada.
POLARTEC CHALLENGE
www.polartec.com
$1,500 to $5,000 Look for a multicultural or conservation angle, and submit a detailed map displaying your plans-the Polartec reviewers love charts. Emergency room nurse Rob Walker, 39, and middle school teacher Karen Holm, 40, got $2,000 plus gear for a Chilean sea kayak trip.
