  1. A new version of a bill to deter illegal immigration landed on President Bush’s desk this week. The Senate passed the Border Fence Bill last Friday night, authorizing the building of a fence along one third of the U.S.-Mexico border. The House of Representatives passed the bill two weeks ago.
  2. Four Americans were notified that they will receive Nobel Prizes in medicine and physics.
  3. Some doctors with many patients are trying to be in more than one place at a time, thanks to new technology. Robotic tele-medicine allows Dr. Neil Martin to connect to patients in UCLA Medical Center’s ICU without leaving his office.
  4. Global warming may not be a top priority to the average person, but it is a major danger to residents of the Maldives, a group of tiny coral islands south of India in the Indian Ocean.
  5. Folks near Tampa, Florida saw an unusual sight last week – a large Victorian mansion floating up the Manatee River. The Corbett family saved the house from destruction in the path of new condominiums.
  6. Ohio Senator Mike DeWine and Congressman Sherrod Brown debated each other on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. Senator DeWine is running for re-election and Congressman Brown hopes to win that Senate seat in next month’s election.
  7. TThe dazzling art of Dale Chihuly will amaze visitors to the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus beginning October 7th. The glass artist’s new work is called “Fiori,” with hand-blown glass shapes that look like a colorful garden landscape. www.fpconservatory.org.
  8. Major Nicole Malachowski has made a childhood dream come true. She is a combat pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and a pilot for the Thunderbirds. She’s the first female on any U.S. military fighter jet team.
  9. The Cobb Ranch in Fresno has designed another challenging corn maze. This year the maze is designed to look like the California state quarter.
  10. In May, a tiny gosling showed up in Max Frankel’s yard – and stayed. The Canada Goose, named Harley for Max’s motorcycle, has become a family pet. Harley flies along while Max rides his motorcycle. The family hopes to introduce Harley to his own kind next spring.
