Can’t take the whole week away from home, try the mini version of the BIG DIG! This experience is designed for those who want to participate in an archaeological dig but cannot spare the large amount of time usually required.

What does an archeological experience, the shores of Lake Erie, Danbury Site, Lighthouses, boat rides, food, fun, technology and Marblehead all have in common? If you guessed the “BIG DIG” for TEACHERS, YOU ARE CORRECT!

This is a chance of a lifetime for those interested in an action packed week filled with adventure! Teachers will explore Field Methods in Archaeology. Teachers will be working directly with Archaeologists from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

The Purpose of the BIG DIG is to Integrate Archaeology, Science, Social Studies and Technology in outdoor hands on setting. The best part of all, the teachers will be working with experts as they discover artifacts from Pre-Historic Native American Indian Civilizations found right here in Ohio. This Danbury site contains the remains of several prehistoric occupations, the earliest of which dates to 4,500 years ago. DIG by day and fun at night on the shores of Lake Erie. Teachers will be able to explore the rich history on the shores of Lake Erie. What more could you ask for?

The Big Dig is a collaborative project between WVIZ/PBS ideastream and the Archaeology Department of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The Course interweaves Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Archaeology and Technology. Field Course is designed to give the teachers a comprehensive introduction to archaeological field work. All participants will be introduced to the methods of archaeological survey, techniques of hand excavation, artifact identification, and the preparation of field notes and supplemented by formal and informal lectures and discussions about archaeological methods and regional prehistory. In addition, Technology will be interwoven. Please join us for the BIG DIG that will take place in Burrell Orchard in Lorain County, Ohio!

Purposes: To learn about Native Americans and their settlement. To experience hands on Archaeology. To work with the experts. To collaborate with other Teachers. Join us on THE BIG DIG!

August 6: Learn the complete operation of a digital camera and leave with the skills to use it as a teaching tool. Learn about the unique design of Progressive Field as well as classroom resources available for teachers. Get the inside scoop on the stadium. Walk onto field, sit in the dugout and visit the locker room and batting cage Use your digital camera to take capture this all. Activities discussed support the Ohio State Physical Education Standards. August 13: At WVIZ, learn how to download digital pictures into various applications, how to clone, print and add text to a digital picture with Photo Editing Software, and how to place documents and pictures on-line that will be accessible from the Internet. You will be required to develop a presentation that contains pictures and documents of your visit to Progressive Field. This will become a resource that you will be able to use in your class and will be accessible on-line. You will receive complete hands-on instruction on organizing your on-line presentation. The TI-SmartView software package from TI provides a virtual TI-84 calculator on your Windows or Macintosh personal computer. The software enables a large version of the calculator to appear on a computer screen or interactive smartboard. You can actually operate the calculator image on your computer by using the mouse. With a projector, students will be able to see each key stroke the teachers uses to solve any problem. This helps students follow along and stay on track. Podcasting is a way to automatically download and synchronize digital audio and video files from the internet to your own iPod. An iPod in a teacher's hand can record notes and podcasts and transport digital files back and forth to school.

Invest in two summer days and receive knowledge that will last for a lifetime. Learn all there is to know in creating a podcast. The first Saturday you will receive a brand new silver Apple 4GB Nano Video iPod along with a Logictech USB microphone. With this equipment, you will learn how to create a podcast that can directly impact your classroom or district. The next week you will edit and fine tune your podcast and learn how to share with others via websites. Also, explore a myriad of free resources that you will be able to download on to your iPod. An excellent workshop for those who want to exceed in technology! Graduate credit will be available through Ashland University for an additional amount of $180 per credit. Limited space available.
*Attend the open lab and do an additional assignment for a two graduate credits.
