1. People across the United States paused this week for a moment of silence, remembering the loss of almost 3,000 lives. Tuesday marked the sixth anniversary of the September 11 th attacks. Families, friends and fellow Americans gathered in many locations to pay their respects.

2. The Chinese army is invading the British Museum. Twenty terra cotta warriors, buried to protect china's first emperor of the Qin dynasty in the afterlife, are on loan from China.

3. The Cincinnati Bengals won a wild game on Monday night as they played the Baltimore Ravens in their first regular season game. Quarterback Carson Palmer completed a 39-yard pass to Chad Johnson in the first quarter, giving the Bengals the first score. Bengals 27, Ravens 20. http://www.bengals.com/

4. The Cleveland Browns had a far worse outcome on Sunday afternoon as they played their old rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Browns starting quarterback Charlie Frye had a very bad day, getting sacked five times. On Tuesday, the Browns announced that Frye was traded to the Seattle Seahawks.

5. Emily McKenney of Westerville, Ohio heard a scratch at the door, and discovered an alligator on her front step. Neighbor Paul Barrow rescues reptiles and one of his alligators escaped from its outdoor cage while he was out of town. A Westerville city ordinance bans alligators, so all of Barrow’s alligators have to go. The Columbus Zoo will give all of the gators temporary homes.

6. Dan Gallagher tells us about a road in India that is paved with good intentions – and plastic. Researchers in Kerala, South India, are experimenting with a new road surface that combines recycled plastic with asphalt for a better roadway.

7. Not all recycling ideas are good ones. Forty years ago, old rubber tires were deposited on the ocean floor off the coast of Florida, to help form a new artificial reef. The tires have had the opposite effect, killing everything on the ocean floor beneath them. Efforts are now underway to remove the tires.

8. A group of students in Pontiac, Michigan wants grocery stores in the area to protect the environment by using biodegradable bags at their checkout counter. One manager agreed the biodegradable bags are better for the environment but cost 8 cents more per bag than plastic. He still might test the bags in his store.

9. Sally Pitts introduces us to a very young college student. Eleven-year-old Heath Harding should be starting sixth grade but instead he’s a freshman college student in Montgomery, Alabama.

10. It’s a sure bet that Sacramento State University freshman Estelle Reese-Arroyo is the oldest kid in her class. This 90-year-old is taking nine credits this fall because she doesn’t want her brain to get moldy. Estelle plans to major in American history.

12. The Oregon Zoo introduced a newborn Francois Langur monkey this week. This species is endangered in the wild, and less than 75 of the monkeys live in North American zoos. Francois Langurs are found in northeast Vietnam, southern portions of China and west-Central Laos. They are endangered because of human contact, poaching for medical use and deforestation. http://www.oregonzoo.org/
