1. About 73,000 workers in the U.S. returned to work this week, ending the largest nationwide General Motors/United Auto Workers strike in over thirty years. After two days off the job, the strike was suspended after the UAW and GM reached a tentative agreement on a new four year national contract.

2. President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended the 62 nd General Assembly meeting of the United Nations in New York this week. Bush spoke about his concerns with the country of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, saying that people living there are denied basic freedoms due to a government of “terror.”

3. The controversial leader of Iraq, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was also at the U.N. Assembly this week. While in the U.S., he was invited to speak at Columbia University in New York on Monday. The invitation outraged many people who dislike Ahmadinejad because of offensive comments he has made, such as denying that the Holocaust occurred. Protestors gathered outside Columbia University, while others said freedom of speech is granted to all.

4. James MacDonald shows us why too much food can be a bad thing, not just for our waistlines. In Hong Kong, too much food waste is ending up in landfills where it creates methane as a byproduct of rotting. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.

6. Cedar Fair Entertainment Company announced this week that it will close its 119-year-old Geauga Lake Amusement Park due to low attendance in recent years. The company plans to add more attractions at its water park on the same property, Wildwater Kingdom.

7. An enthusiastic crowd of 1,882 harmonica players played Frere Jacques and broke the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Harmonica Play-Along” on Sunday at Cleveland Metroparks’ Rocky River Reservation in North Olmsted.

8. The Cleveland Indians claimed their title as Central Division Champions before a sell-out crowd at Jacobs Field on Sunday. They head to the post-season for the first time in six years.

9. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office is helping to keep their rural residents safer in emergencies, giving them special light adapters for their front door lights. If they call 9-1-1 with an emergency, they can flip the light switch once to make their front porch lights blink on and off, directing emergency crews more easily to their homes.

10. Surfers Healing was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz after their son was diagnosed with autism. A competitive surfer, Izzy found that their son was soothed by riding on a surfboard with his dad. Izzy and Danielle now host day camps to provide surfing to other children with autism.

11. A staff member at a retirement home in New England brought his kids’ Nintendo Game System to work, and found that the senior residents enjoyed the games. It seems to help their hand-eye coordination and overall health, too.

12. Dr. Lynn Ogden, a Brigham Young University Professor, had an idea to make a new product. He added carbon dioxide bubbles to yogurt to make a fizzy treat. Buddy Blankenfield shows us how long it took from invention to selling the actual product – Yoplait’s GoGurt Fizzix.

13. Kodi, the tree-climbing dog, climbs 40-foot-high spruce trees. It all started when Kodi was helping her owner hunt birds. Now owner Pat Tully can’t stop her from climbing to the sky.
