1. Former Vice-President, Al Gore received a very high honor this month. Al Gore is now both an Oscar winner and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winners last week. Gore and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, won the Prize for their efforts in educating the world about global warming and for laying out a plan to counteract the situation.

2. College students from across the country and the world gathered and presented their ideas for “Homes of the Future” at the third annual International Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC. Ten categories in solar design for college students show what the sun can do. The houses are judged on innovation and livability. Solar energy currently provides less than 1% of America’s energy supply.

3. Heavy rains pummeled parts of Iowa over the weekend, with up to five inches in some areas. It wasn’t just Iowa that was hit with rain. Ten golfers in Texas had to be rescued from high water when a nearby creek flooded. They found an elevated area and waited for help. And while some parts of the country have too much water, others need it. North Carolina is experiencing its worst drought ever. Governor Mike Easly asked his constituents to conserve water by not washing cars, watering lawns, and other sacrifices.

4. This story shows that one man’s trash – waste – can be another man’s treasure – or benefit. A Benson, Minnesota power plant is running on turkey dung. Manure from turkeys provides the power to 40,000 homes in the area. This unusual renewal energy resource is odorless when burned. The Fibrominn LLC plant is the first poultry-waste-powered energy plant in the U.S.

5. Ten years ago, a group of Marines wanted to develop a race to raise money for Toys for Tots. Today the race is known as the Mud Run. The annual Volkslauf Mud Run, held last Saturday in California, consists of a run, a Marine obstacle course and plenty of mud pits. Over 80,000 people have participated over the years, military personnel and civilians alike.

6. Another competition that showcased some of the best break-dancers – or B-Boys – in the world took place in the United Kingdom last weekend. Break dancing was born in the 1970s in New York City. Crews, or teams, from around the world brought their best moves to a competition in which a team from South Korea took home the prize.

7. A new exhibit at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus features the Enchanted Express, a very small-scale railway. Bridges, buildings and scenery are made of plant materials like mosses, twigs, leaves and seeds. The indoor garden railway rolls its way through the conservatory’s plant collections and past tiny architectural wonders of the world. The railway was designed by Paul Busse, an Ohio State grad who got his start as a landscape architect.

8. You may have heard of therapy dogs who visit patients in hospitals. The Wadsworth Public Library has invited three therapy dogs into their children’s department. Since dogs are such good listeners, Brodie, Elmo and Sonnet listen to stories read by children and give them positive feedback with doggie kisses and wagging tails. Brodie, a golden retriever, is owned by Linda Warner, a library staff member and president of Wooster-based Caring Therapy Canines. Brodie, Elmo and Sonnet will listen to your stories at the library on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to noon.

9. Burr Road Middle School in Wauseon has its very own therapy dog. Kramer the labradoodle was trained by Assistance Dogs of America in Swanton, Ohio. He lives with principal Joe Friess, but Kramer belongs to all the students and staff at the school. Kramer will always be ready to listen, wag his tail, and make his fellow students feel better. There is a $25 application fee to assistance dogs of America, but no charge to schools for the dogs. Kramer is one of several therapy dogs at schools in northwest Ohio.

10. While obesity rates continued to climb in 31 states last year, there are opportunities to stay fit everywhere. Judy Fortin says getting or keeping fit can be as simple as walking the dog, as proven by a recent study.

11. When Latasha Aremendariz’s beloved bulldog, Porkchop, went missing, she offered a $500 reward. When no one responded to the offer, she posted her 1996 customized Ford Mustang as a reward. When someone brought the dog to her house, she didn’t ask any questions, just handed over the keys. She wanted to teach her children that family is the most important thing beyond any material item.

12. Archaeologists are unearthing secrets of Florida’s past as a shipwreck from 1559 has been discovered. The ship, one of ten under the command of Spain’s Don Tristan de Luna, was wrecked by a hurricane nearly 450 years ago.

13. Nearly 2,000 baby turtles washed ashore in Volusia County, Florida. The Marine Science Center has tried to rehabilitate the baby green, loggerhead and kemp’s ridley turtles that washed ashore in the seaweed they live in during rough waves caused by an off-shore storm. 1500 of the tiny turtles were released back into the ocean last week, but about 1200 of them washed back to shore again days later. Biologists, beach patrols and visitors are rescuing the turtles and starting the rehabilitation cycle over again. The turtles will be released again when the weather breaks.
