In 2002 Joan Southgate, a noted author, historic preservationist, retired social worker, and 73-year-old grandmother walked 519 miles of the Underground Railroad route in tribute to thousands of brave individuals who sought freedom from human bondage.

From February through May of 2005, Joan traveled the same route a second time, revisiting many of the famous landmarks, knowledgeable experts, and descendents of slaves and abolitionists. Unlike her first trip, each stop on her latest journey was videotaped, and it was also transmitted live to hundreds of teachers and students throughout Ohio via interactive video distance learning technology.

This website will allow you to share the experiences, visit the sites, and hear the stories along her trail. View the videos, read Joan’s journal, explore the interactive maps and enjoy Freedom Quest: Ohio.
