Today I’m In their path in Batavia near Cincinnati
We went to 2 schools today Batavia Middle School this morning and Mt. Orab Middle School in the afternoon. At Batavia I spoke to the 8 th grade class they we sort of quiet at first but when it was time to come over to meet me they had some good questions. Batavia Middle school was on the same street as our hotel. But you wouldn’t know it by looking at our map quest directions. Terry & I were late late late because we got lost lost lost.
Mt. Orab was in the afternoon and a lively bunch they had all kinds of questions. I’ve had an email from a student there already. Historian Jerry Gore came to the school as well and it was a real treat when he sang the spiritual “Trampin, Trampin” and explained the secret meaning of the song. “Trampin, Trampin gonna make heaven my home” Heaven was the code word for Canada or freedom. Slaves often sang songs to let each other know when it was time to run.
