Our visit is with 3 rd and 4 th grade student in Prospect school. This was a return visit, two teachers, Ms. Woods and Ms. DeMarinis had been my hosts during the walk and today I got to visit the present third and fourth grade kids. This is a group very knowledgeable about the UGRR and Oberlin’s history. In fact both Ms. Woods and Ms. DeMarinis helped write an excellent Oberlin history book used by third grade students. There is a whole chapter on the Underground Railroad. This book would be a good resource for any school. I should have asked whether it is available to schools outside of Oberlin. Write to Ms. Gail Wood or Ms. Jan De Marinis at Prospect Elementary School, 30 South Prospect Street, Oberlin, Ohio 44074 and ask them.

The class had already looked up the WVIZ web site and they were full of questions and comments e.g. “How could people of that time say they believe in freedom and still own slaves?” This class has already had some powerful discussions led by some great teachers.
