Next week is the last week of our Freedom Quest project and I have been meaning to tell you about some of the many wonderful books I have found about Underground Railroad and Freedom.
I keep discovering new books. When we were at Mt. Vernon’s Twin Oak Elementary School on May 2 nd, it was exciting to see the long row of books they had lined up, twenty to thirty books all about UGRR and slavery, to greet us. Just a sample of the books they have in their school library. Not all public schools have such well stocked libraries. However public libraries are a good source, do you go to your neighborhood public library? I used to go every single week when I was a kid. I still go to the library all of the time, and I love to browse in book stores too.
Here are is a sample of books I have used recently:
- Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen A slave secretly teaches reading in the dark of night
- Freedom Light by Edith Gaines my friend Edith wrote this book about two famous Ripley, Ohio conductors
- Trouble Don’t Last by Shelley Pearsall An eleven year old boy rescued from slavery by an elderly fellow slave, together they run toward freedom.
- Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Linda Brent, an early nineteen century slave authentic narrative
- The Freedom Stairs by Marilyn Seguin (I just bought this book at the John Rankin museum in Ripley. It is excellent; a good story, well written with a nicely organized resource addenda.
- No Man Can Hinder Me the journey from slavery to emancipation through song by Velma Maia Thomas (This has history and poetry and music, it is exquisite.)
And here are two adult books that are among my favorites
- Peace Pilgrim compiled by some of her friends
- Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball
