Meet Ardipithecus ramidus
The Sound of Ideas: Monday, October 5, 2009
Cleveland researchers and their international colleagues studied a 4.4 million-year-old skeleton from Ethiopia for the past 15 years; they say the result will completely shift understanding of human evolution. Ardipithecus ramidus walked upright but could also climb trees pretty well, though not as well as a chimp. A million years older than her more famous cousin Lucy(Australopithecus afarensis), Ardi, as she is now known, was closer to human size. Monday morning at 9, we'll hear the story of her discovery, how researchers pieced together an understanding of her life and our ancestors, and the debate she has opened on the exact shape of the hominid family tree.
Is Civility Lost?
The Sound of Ideas: Friday, October 2, 2009
Now that the heat over Congressman Joe Wilson’s “you lie” outburst has cooled and summer’s angry town hall meetings on health care are behind us, ready for a thoughtful conversation about civility? Or, more precisely, the growing lack of civility – not just in the political arena but in sports, on the internet and across the cultural landscape. More people seem to be ready to "unload" at the drop of a hat? Ever catch yourself being uncivil? Friday morning at 9, join Regina Brett and guests as they discuss what's fueling incivility and what can be done about it.

Witness to History
Regional News Stories: Thursday, October 1, 2009
From “Saving Private Ryan” to “Inglourious Basterds”, there have been plenty of tales told in our popular culture about the exploits of World War II soldiers, as portrayed by stars such as Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt. Much less well-known is the story of a humble Northeast Ohio witness to the very start of the Second World War, seventy years ago. 96-year-old Jerzy Maciuszko recently shared some of his harrowing experiences with ideastream®’s David C. Barnett, who has produced a sound portrait that captures the fear along the front lines and the joy of playing violin in a prisoner-of-war orchestra.
Gordon Square Arts District
Applause: Thursday, October 1, 2009
For years you’ve heard the “hype” about the Arts as an economic engine. Coming up on Applause we’ll visit a Cleveland neighborhood that’s getting a big boost thanks in part to three power house theatres that are breathing new life into a tired area. Join us as we raise the curtain on Arts and Economics on the next round of Applause.
