Unemployment Rate Rises to 10.2 Percent; Shoeing Horses is a Centuries Old Job
NewsDepth: Wednesday, November 11, 2009
In October, the unemployment rate in the United States rose to 10.2 percent, the highest rate since April of 1983. The largest job losses were in construction, manufacturing, and retail, according to the U.S. Labor Department. With all the changes going on in our economy these days, it would be helpful to find a job that doesn't go away over time. Photo journalist Eddie Cortes introduces us to the job of shoeing horses - or as it's properly called, working as a "farrier." He takes us to Covington, Georgia to meet Doug Workman and Dave Pervus, each of whom works as journeyman farrier.
Quaker Square Train Collection Preserved in New Museum
NewsDepth: Wednesday, November 11, 2009
If you've ever visited the city of Akron, you've probably seen Quaker Square. Its thirty two grain silos were built by Quaker Oats in 1932. In the 1970s, Quaker Square began a new life with shops and an ice cream parlor, and later as a hotel. Now the University of Akron has purchased the building to house students. But what would become of the many antiques and memorabilia that made Quaker Square a fun place to visit? The university has opened a museum, to preserve some of those items, many of which relate to trains. A tiny one-of-a-kind circus is also there. The museum is part of the General Store, still located on the first floor of Quaker Square.

Lessons from Green Cities
The Sound of Ideas: Monday, November 9, 2009
At the first Sustainable Cleveland 2019 summit in August, citizens and local leaders generated ideas ranging from the practical to the somewhat dreamy. The thing is, Cleveland doesn't have to re-invent this wheel. In his recent books Green Urbanism and Resilient Cities, Tim Beatley tells the stories of how city planners have greened their communities, such as Helsinki, where hot water from power plants is piped to nearby buildings to provide heat, or Freiburg, where there no cars downtown. Beatley is coming to town for an event with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. Monday morning at 9, we'll talk to him and local thinkers and doers about Greater Cleveland's potential for a greener future.

State of Ohio: Friday, November 6, 2009
There were nearly 1,800 tax questions, school levies and local races among the issues on ballots across the state, along with the three statewide issues. And while voter turnout was expected to be around 20%, the actual result was more than 40%. All three statewide issues passed, but the star of the show on election night was easily Issue 3, the constitutional amendment that will permit two developers’ groups to build one casino each in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo.

What Would Merging Mean?
Northeast Ohio's economy has drastically changed over the last decade. Municipal budgets have shrunk. Manufacturing jobs have declined and the urban core -- Cleveland -- is losing population.
